“I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her.
Wow. I would love to think I would respond to God like that whenever he asks anything of me.
I know my heart posture isn’t always so quick to obey as Mary’s is in this retelling. And if the call was “miraculously conceive and give birth to a Messiah” – well, I honestly have no idea how I’d respond to that.
Mary’s response to the angel Gabriel’s announcement that she would do just that demonstrates remarkable faith and readiness, despite the extraordinary nature of the news. She’s a powerful example of how being ready to speak the Good News requires us to be ready to obey and trust in God.
Though she was young, Mary lived as a Jewish woman with a deep faith and knowledge of Scripture. She would have been familiar with prophecies about the coming Messiah. She lived and worshiped to honor God.
Mary was ready to speak because:
despite being troubled and confused by the revelation, she didn’t react with disbelief.
she pondered the announcement with a clear mind, asking a practical question (v. 34).
she knew and accepted her role in God’s plan, referring to herself as the “Lord’s servant” (v. 38).
she was ready to follow God’s will, regardless of the personal cost.
This time of year, I’m particularly grateful for Mary’s “yes.” Her faithful response set the tone for her role as the mother of Jesus, demonstrating a readiness to embrace God’s plan despite its mysterious and life-altering nature.
What about you? Are you ready to say “yes” to whatever the Lord has called you to, despite the personal cost? Are you ready to speak for Christ when the time comes? What steps can you take this season to attune your heart with God’s heart?
