This past January I had the opportunity to serve as a Recommended Staff Assistant, or RSA at Ignite. RSAs focus on learning servant leadership, which means we set up rooms, break down rooms, and sometimes wait tables.
At first, it sounded interesting, but I wasn’t quite sure if I wanted to. After all, it was just easier to not try something new and step out of my comfort zone. What if it turned out to be a terrible experience?
Then, I remembered a quote from Shakespeare’s play Measure for Measure. “Our doubts are traitors, and make us lose the good we oft might win, by fearing to attempt.” I realized that I was afraid to attempt. So, I went as an RSA, and I don’t regret it. Although this definitely stretched me, I learned that I didn’t have to do this alone. Several people came alongside me, and helped me, whether that meant hugs, back rubs, or a note. The greatest thing I took away from Ignite was this: it’s not the experience itself that helps you grow - it’s the people you share it with.
