Fellowship of friends

“Even the smallest person can change the course of the future,” -- but not alone.

Anyone who knows me will know that I’m a serious Lord of the Rings lover, as you might have noticed from this quote. But there’s something that I’ve been learning recently that brought the story of the Fellowship of the Ring to life. About a year and a half ago, my ICC mentor inspired me to finish the Young Speakers’ Guild curriculum. This would be something that no one in my chapter had done before! I thought I would be able to do this easily, but I didn’t realize how much help I would need to accomplish it.

It was hard to write and prepare my speeches when I was feeling pressed for time. Once, I got so insecure before presenting a speech I cried. And there were many times when I became discouraged and doubted that I would be able to reach the end at all. The closer I got to my Guild Induction, the more I realized just how many people were helping me along the journey, despite my fears and tears and doubts. They answered my questions, gave me feedback for my speeches, and listened to me unload about how I was feeling.

Now, looking back, I know I wouldn’t have gotten far without my friends, family and their support. This experience helped me understand that just like in The Lord of the Rings - alone, we are simply ordinary, but with a Fellowship of friends, we can do something extraordinary.
