From child bride to extraordinary leader

There’s a heartbreaking reality occurring in The Gambia to this day: the practice of taking child brides.

Though outlawed five years ago in the country, the act of giving young girls away in marriage still plagues The Gambia today. Many of these undervalued children end up on the streets - broken and destitute.

Pastor Abou Camara is changing their story.

Driven by Christ’s example, Pastor Camara and some friends began rescuing these “girl brides” from off the street, providing them with basic necessities and offering hope. To this day, he feeds, houses, clothes, and provides schooling for 250 students, mostly girls, from ages 9-18.

With Pastor Camara’s help, the narrative of despair that was unfolding for these young ladies can now be one of empowerment, of redemption, and of extraordinary leadership. With a pastor who cares and advocates for them in their corner, they are striving not only to get a basic education, but to rise to university level and beyond, becoming national leaders and Christian missionaries in their country to make far-reaching impacts.

ICC’s focus on leadership development has been an inspiration for Pastor Camara and his school. They have begun using our Beginning Public Speaking curriculum, and several were able to join us for iCON 2021 and dig deeper.

Now, we want to provide resources and training for every classroom and offer every student a seat at Communicators for Christ. We need your help to empower them all! Check out our Empower Africa campaign to be a part of this transformational culture shift starting in The Gambia.
