Unity.
It’s something that is so needed and yet seems so unattainable these days. In the world, in our churches or social groups, and sometimes even in our own homes.
When I started out as a communications coach, debate was popularly practiced in homeschool co-ops and speech clubs. And though it helped students practice some important skills, they always fought to “win” the argument by defeating an opponent.
In the real world, we see a much greater need for consensus-building. Workers and advocates who know how to listen as well as speak, who have the skill of being objective, and are committed to pursuing unity.
Consensus-building is a huge part of having an influence and collaborating effectively. ICC students learn it thoroughly through our Round Table exercise (which they practice in local chapters and at our events). We provide many opportunities to help our adults practice it too.
This year at our International Convention (iCON), in addition to our extraordinary global gatherings and expert workshops, we’re going to engage in real world consensus-building. We’ll discuss massive cultural shifts, close-to-home issues and conundrums, and conversations you might be dreading having with your children (puberty, anyone?).
Not only do we want your voice in the discussion, but I’d love for you to take away some applicable and relevant practices to use in your own home. Plan to join us.
Join RI HOPE, the area ICC Chapter to become part of a community
where parents intentionally mentor the next generation of unity-builders.
