Reflections from our 2022 sabbatical

“In rhythms of rest we discover our time is full of the holiness of God.” - Shelly Miller Once again, our February sabbatical has taught me more about the importance of rest than I could have expected going into it.

When we have a global mission and a calling as high as empowering next-generation Christians to influence today’s culture, we need to be able to tap into the true and beautiful potential of each leader God blesses us with. And that requires time for them to refresh and rejuvenate.

Our strategic volunteers and global leaders shared some of their reflections with me after spending the month focusing on family, recreation, inspiration, retreat, emotional health, and more. Here are just a few of their insights:

  • I spent valuable time reflecting on new perspectives of my ICC roles.

  • I’m going to plan more fun into my daily routine!

  • How grateful I am to have had time dedicated to family, friends, and newborns who live too far away to visit often.

  • It was a blessing to spend time with my adult children to process together their childhood experiences through an adult filter.

  • I am learning to “let my list go.”

  • I enjoyed time this month spent with acquaintances from church who now have become new friends.

  • I made time to read books, listen to podcasts, and enjoy long coffee dates with unhurried conversation.

  • I revised what my ideal week looks like.

  • I was able to spend time discerning my next steps in personal development with my Spiritual Director.

  • Such a gift to be able to spend time away from my computer, email, and video calls.

I love hearing these reflections, because they remind me just how valuable it is to make space for these important pieces of life, so that we can truly bring our best to our ministry.

Thank you for praying with and for us during the month of February. It is rare for organizations, let alone nonprofits, to invite their leaders to regularly practice sabbatical. I am so pleased ICC is an organization that values our people by providing experiences like this. It is such a profound privilege to serve you as a part of this life-giving community.
